Four people died and many more were injured when a tornado ripped through Hattiesburg on January 21, 2017, but a statue of Jesus remained standing on the campus of a Christian college (William Carey University). WDAM TV published a photograph on their Facebook page:
Reporters provided the following details:
- Four people died
- Multiple injuries were also reported
- Extensive damage was reported on Arledge Street
- Damage was evident for multiple blocks
- structures destroyed
- roofs missing
- downed trees and power lines
- William Carey University also took a major hit from the storm.
- There is damage to most buildings on campus
- Fire station number 2 in Downtown Hattiesburg suffered a direct hit.
- Power lines blocked one of their firetrucks
- Multiple gas lines were ruptured and broken
- Extensive damage was also been reported on Sullivan Kilraine Road
- and Richburg Road in Lamar County.
- The Living Word Church on Tatum Road took significant damage
- There was also extensive damage done in Petal.
- The strip mall near Foxes Pizza was destroyed.
- Walmart suffered significant damage

But forget the dead, forget the injured, forget the damage, forget everything. The statue of Jesus was still standing and that's the only thing that interested the Christians who left their comments on the WDAM TV Facebook page.
Some of these comments sound like they come from non-Christians taking the piss, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are all from devout believers. You see the Christians have wasted their whole life believing that god will protect them from bad things and therefore, when something bad happens to them, they have to interpret it as something good! If they tell that lie to themselves (and to each other) then their belief in the goodness of god remains firm. If they didn't tell that lie to themselves they would have to admit they have wasted their whole life worshipping a callous and uncaring god - and they simply do not have the courage to make that admission.
So here are a few of the hundreds of comments:
