This Spun Me Out

Last night I woke up at about 3am and when I turned over my head plopped back onto the pillow and the whole room started spinning!

It got faster and faster and I was starting to think there would be no recovery. I figured it wasn't a heart attack because there was no pain involved, but my brain had certainly short-circuited and I thought I was in big trouble.

Then, after about 30 seconds, the room began to slow down again and a minute later things were back to normal.

I wonder what it was.

Shut Up While I Tell You What You Really Think

Just for fun I want to start this post by repeating the 9th commandment from the Holy Christian Bible:
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
(Exodus 20:6)

In an article for the Independent newspaper, Janet Street-Porter stated that she is a Christian who believes in God.
I believe in the power of prayer and have done since childhood, attending an Anglican primary and secondary school ... These days, people are astonished to discover I believe in God.
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/

In the article she referred to a survey which found that:
For the first time, non-believers are in the majority. In England and Wales, a new study shows that only 43 per cent of the population admit they are Christians, while almost 50 per cent reckon they have no religious beliefs – double the number of five years ago.
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/

But pride would not allow her to accept that her tribe of religious zealots are now in the minority so she casually declared that most non-believers in the country are cheats and liars!
Most Brits are secret believers: they have faith but just don’t want to admit it.

It would seem that the 9th commandment is not the only biblical law she has chosen to ignore:
Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another ... who are you to judge your neighbor? (James 4:11-12)

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths (Ephesians 4:29)

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. (Luke 6:37)

Everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. (Matthew 12:36)

Do not spread false reports. (Exodus 23:1)

Murphy's Law

It was in all the newspapers and on the radio: The big block of flats on the other side of town were about to be demolished.

This guy grabbed his video camera and headed down to the viewing area. He set up the camera; got it perfectly focused and made sure the building was properly framed in the view-finder.

Then he hit the 'record' button and waited for the big event:

There's Nothing Like That In The Bible

The video shows Tim Wildmon (president of the American Family Association) speaking on the radio program. "Today's Issues" on January 19th, 2015. He complains that Islam's Quran "has explicit admonitions or instructions for followers of Allah to do violence and harm against the infidel," and he goes on to say, "There's nothing like that in the Bible."

Original video here:

Most Christians would assume that Wildmon is speaking the truth. They have been brought up to believe that Christians are required to love their neighbours (and their enemies too) so the idea of killing anyone doesn't sound (to them) like an idea that came from their very own bible. On the Quora website, for example, when somebody asked the question:
"Does Christianity ever advocate or condone killing
non-believers?
Allen Taylor replied:
"Christianity does not advocate killing or murdering
non-Christians on the basis of their unbelief."
It is not surprising to hear Christians answer that question in the negative because many of them have never read the bible and have no idea what is in it. They usually have the bible read to them by a preacher in the pulpit. He picks out all the good bits and skips over all the bad bits and thus gives the impression that the bible is all about love and tolerance when, in fact, it  is chock full of torture porn.

Check out the thirteenth chapter of Deuteronomy:
If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” ... do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death ... Stone them to death.
And when you've finished killing all your friends and relations, you can head off into the neighbouring towns and kill all of those bastards as well!
If you hear it said about one of the towns...that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods”...you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.

When they are first told about these texts, many Christians will deny that the bible contains such horrendous laws, but once they have read the text with their own eyes they invariably start looking for escape routes. They declare that these are Old Testament laws which no longer apply - because modern Christians (they claim) are bound only to the rules of the New Testament, not the Old Testament.

That's what Joshua Engel said at the Quora website:
"Mainstream Christianity focuses largely on the peaceful message of the New Testament."
And David Wilkinson was also keen to divert attention from the Old Testament and concentrate on what he thought was the much more pleasant teachings of the New Testament:
"I can't think of anything in the New Testament that could even remotely advocate killing a non-believer ... The New Testament doesn't provide a shred of evidence for killing a non-believer, just because they are a non-believer."
But the escape into the New Testament is no help because some of its teachings are just as depraved as those in the Old Testament. For example, in the gospel of Matthew (the very first book in the New Testament) it is made clear that the Lord Jesus Christ really does want the unbelievers killed:
If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." (Matthew 18:6)

To quote Tim Wildmon once again:
"The Quran has explicit admonitions or instructions for followers of Allah to do violence and harm against the infidel [but] There's nothing like that in the Bible.
He's wrong! There is a lot like that in the bible.

Pastor Glyn Barrett (Telling Lies For Jesus)

Pastor Glyn Barrett told his congregation that he had been invited to Cambridge University to debate the existence of god in front of a group of atheists. He said that the atheist would speak for fifteen minutes but the good pastor would be allowed to speak for only ten minutes:
"The president of the atheistic club; he will stand up and he will share for fifteen minutes on how there is no god. And then we're gonna give you ten minutes to prove to us that there is a god."
As soon as he said that I knew he was telling lies for Jesus. There is no way a place like Cambridge University would conduct a debate under such unfair conditions.

Then (said the lying pastor) the atheist walked on stage, spitting and frothing at the mouth, and hurling insults at poor old Pastor Barrett:
"And the lead atheist; he gets up and he's preaching, and he's spitting, and he's frothing at the mouth, and he's eloquent, and he's brilliant: 'How can any rational person believe that there is a god? You gotta be stupid to believe there is a god'."
But the atheists didn't stop there said Pastor Barrett. He said they booed and hissed as he approached the stage:
"And now we're gonna get Glyn Barrett and he's gonna come up and tell us why there is a god ... So I get up on stage and there's boos and hisses and all these sorts of things."
By now every atheist in the world knew that Pastor Glyn Barrett's claims were complete and utter bullshit. Take a look at any formal debate between atheists and Christians - especially those held at Universities - and you will never, ever, see anyone behaving as badly as Pastor Glyn Barrett says the Cambridge atheists did.

So now the atheists began leaving comments on Pastor Glyn Barrett's Facebook page, asking him to prove that there really was a debate at Cambridge University and that the atheist really did behave so badly.

Pastor Glyn Barrett did what so many Christian preachers do in situations like this: He deleted all the adverse comments and hoped to Christ the publicity would soon die down.

But it was too late. All across the Internet people were discussing the lies told by Pastor Glyn Barrett until it reached a point where he felt he had to try and rectify the situation. He went back to his Facebook page and wrote:
"It was not my intention for it to come across that the debate forum was Cambridge. As you know, sometimes in public speaking, when you are in a rush, you don't always articulate things in the best manner."
But it was too little too late. The cat was out of the bag. Pastor Glyn Barrett had told lies to his gullible congregation and he had been caught out.

And since there was nothing he could do to save himself, he casually set about destroying the evidence. He deleted the video; deleted his own explanation; deleted all the adverse comments, and apparently started sulking. (Three days later and there has been no new activity on his Facebook page.)

But I downloaded the video for safe-keeping and you can see it below. It's something I do whenever I hear a preacher telling lies or talking nonsense. I know that if they get any adverse publicity they will quickly destroy the evidence by deleting the video - whereupon I immediately load it back up again! Keeps them on their toes.

Update:
Pastor Glynn Barrett has created several sock puppets and uses them to bignote himself and attack his opponents. All the details here:

It Was An Easy Mistake

Guido Menzio, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania, was working on a differential equation while waiting for the Syracuse-bound plane to take off from Philadelphia ... But a passenger somehow mistook the equation for Arabic or some sort of Islamic code for a terrorist attack. That's how the 41-minute flight ended up delayed by two hours.

I don't blame the poor girl. All those citified, book learnin', professor types, with their new-fangled papers and pencils, and weird scribbling nobody has ever seen before. What else could he be? She should get a medal. [Bloody terrorists.]

Surely There Can't Be Two Of Them

I was living in an Adelaide boarding house in 1976 and one of the residents was named John Nicholls. He was one of the most irritating and pompous men I have ever met. No matter what anyone said or did, John Nicholls would immediately declare that he had done it bigger, better, and earlier than anyone else. He could run faster and walk slower than anyone else on the planet. He was a genius and the rest of the population was there for his amusement. All you had to do was ask him and he'd tell you.

I left the boarding house and lost track of the people who lived there, but a few years later I read a newspaper story about an incident that occurred near Mt Isa in northern Queensland.

It seems that three or four young guys decided to go on a camping trip in the bush near Mt Isa where they all worked. One of the guys was a man named John Nicholls who managed to get himself invited on the trip even though he was still on crutches following a recent work accident. Perhaps the other guys felt sorry for him.

Well the camping trip turned into a nightmare. They said that John Nicholls turned out to be one of the most irritating and pompous men they had ever met. He made it clear to them that he was a genius and they were idiots and no matter what they did, he had done it bigger and better than they ever could.

Eventually the guys could take no more. They kicked him out of the car; tossed his crutches out after him - and then drove back to Mt Isa. They didn't even bother to tell anyone.

John Nicholls was found about a week later; dead from thirst and exposure.

I've often wondered if he was the same John Nicholls I knew in the Adelaide boarding house.
