Raleigh police charged Phelps, 29, with murder Friday morning after finding his wife, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps, also 29, mortally stabbed at the townhouse where they lived on Patuxent Drive. On the 911 call, the dispatcher asked Phelps what had happened.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor. There’s blood all over me, and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it. I took more medicine that I should have. I took Coricidin Cough and Cold because I know it can make you feel good and sometimes I can’t sleep at night.”
Matthew Phelps worked at Dunlap Lawn Service and graduated from Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in 2011 in Pineville, Ky., where he studied mission and evangelism.
The sleep walking defense is reasonably common among wife-killers but the 'cough medicine' cause is quite unusual.
It's strange how these incidents always result in an innocent party being killed. You never hear of an apprentice preacher taking cough medicine; going unconscious, and then waking up to find he has been stabbing himself in the legs with a hat pin. That never happens. It's always the wife who cops the stabbing - and she's always dead. Never stabbed in the legs; always stabbed in the chest and neck. Strange that...
